The area now known as Bahía Vizcaína was inhabited by the indigenous tequesta, mayaimi and occasionally the calusa. When Juan Ponce de León was dumbfounded with a dazzling variety of indigenous people in the area, which currently corresponds to Miami, in search of the fountain of youth. In 1567 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés consolidates the Spanish presence in the region. On a settlement of the tequesta, the Spanish created the Mission of Tegesta, constructed by Jesuit Francisco Villareal, which was located at the mouth of the Miami River. However, after the successive wars, the Spaniards abandoned the territory.
In 1891, a wealthy widow named Julia Tuttle moved to Florida and bought 640 acres of land on the North Bank of the Miami River. Later on, Tuttle convinced wealthy railway Builder Henry Flagler to extend the railway line to Miami, to build a luxury hotel and establish a new town. The result was the founding of the city in 1896. As a result of these events, thousands of people came to Florida.
Since the beginning of the city, the population was diverse; people from different cultures and different parts of the world came to the new city. The first mayor of Miami was an Irish Catholic, some of the first traders were Jews, while African-Americans and black Bahamian made up one-third of the new members of the city.
