Leon is a municipality in the state of Guanajuato known as the Shoe Capital for its processing of these products from their manufacture to export. Its origin dates from January 20, 1576 by Martin Enriquez de Almansa with the name "Villa de Leon" located in the Bajio region. At the time of the War of Reform, the city changed hands several times between Liberal and conservative forces between 1858 and 1860. Most notable battle of the war was when General José Iniesta attacked the city on February 18, 1859. In 1862 the diocese of León was founded, which separates the city of Leon and nine other municipalities as Irapuato, Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalgo from the bishopric of Michoacan. Between 1863 and 1866, the French occupied León during the French Intervention, with the Emperor Maximilian in the city in 1864. It is located west of the state of Guanajuato. Feast of the Inditos

This tradition originated in 1876 and is held annually on January 12. It consists on dressing children like inditos in memory of the saint Juan Diego and take them to visit the shrine in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Fiesta de San Sebastián

Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Leon
